Shadow Dungeon Getting Started
Pick a class, learn 1.0 systems, and step into the dungeon.
Welcome to Shadow Dungeon. This guide is for the 1.0 full release (August 26, 2026) and live patch 1.0.1 (August 27, 2026). The game is a paid Steam title at $8.99 USD during the 10% intro off $9.99 (listed through September 9, 2026), with a free demo. It is single-player only: no co-op, no MTX shop, no premium XP subscription.
You cannot change class after you create a character. Choose carefully, then commit. All four classes are sold as complete 1.0 identities.
Class selection (official playstyles)
Sorcerer — elemental magic
Ranged caster. Official copy: master elemental magic. You live on spacing, cooldowns, and reading packs. If you like deleting groups from a safe tile, start here.
Holy Warrior — dual blades
Melee. Official copy: wield dual blades. You stay in range of hits and use sustain from the class fantasy, not from a made-up life-steal spreadsheet. If you want to be in the pile, pick this.
Archer — precision
Ranged physical. Official copy: strike with deadly precision. You pick targets and move. If you like kiting and priority shots, pick this.
Necromancer — demons and skeletons
Summoner. Official copy: summon demons and skeletons. You manage an army while you stay alive. If you like pets doing the frontline, pick this.
Deep trees are on Talent Trees and per-class build pages. This page will not invent skill product names.
Core systems you should know on hour one
Map-tied monsters and loot
Monster levels and item drops follow the map, not your player level. You will not make a later temple easy by grinding the first dungeon for hours. Play the maps in front of you. Full explanation: Leveling.
Campaign shape
Seven chapters, 160 maps, about 30–50 hours. Official biomes: dungeons, ancient temples, scorching deserts, haunted ruins, realms beyond reality, hell, Demon Lord. Walkthrough: Chapters. Finish near level 99–100. Cap is 100, then Paragon.
Treasure Sprites
Treasure Sprites pick up equipment, salvage junk to gold, and can pass through walls to grab stuck drops. Different sprites have different extra effects. Patch 1.0.1 increased fairy/sprite movement speed and fixed auto-salvage. Use them so you are not vacuuming the floor by hand.
Combat feel (1.0 notes)
Mouse movement is supported. Controllers get automatic target acquisition and automatic attacks, with per-skill targeting. Buff potions can be used with one button. Inventory, storage, and talent pages accept mouse paging and controller L1/R1. Cursor size is customizable. Steam Deck uses context-sensitive X / A / Y for drop, sell, store, and skill-point actions. Details: Combat and Controls.
Healing and buff items are limited. Do not dump every potion on trash packs. Save them for bosses and maps that out-gear you.
Save and accessibility
Steam tags include Save Anytime, Camera Comfort, Contrast Controls, Custom Volume Controls, and Full controller support. Pause with the menu. There is no advertised always-online requirement.
Your first hours
Hour 1: Finish character create, bind only what you must, and clear the opening dungeon maps. Learn your basic attack and a couple of skills. Watch the demo gameplay if you want a look at combat pacing before you buy.
Hours 2–5: Invest talent points in one of your three class trees so a rotation exists. Equip whatever the current map drops. Open Items only when a rare piece confuses you.
Hours 5–10: You should know whether dual blades, precision, pets, or elements feel right. If not, start a new character — you cannot class-change. Begin thinking about armor sets (fifteen per class in 1.0 notes) without pausing the story for a fake named farm.
Essential tips
- Healing items are limited — spend them when a wipe costs more time than a potion.
- Positioning matters for every class, including Necromancer (you still die if you stand in telegraphs).
- Read attacks — 60-plus bosses and 200-plus monsters are sold as pattern fights.
- Explore — official copy promises hidden treasures; there is no published missable-ID list.
- Stay on 1.0.1 — XP bugs, controller detection, and sprite salvage were patched on August 27, 2026 (Patch 1.0.1).
After the tutorial maps
- Combat for input and fight flow
- Walkthrough for chapters, bosses, Mystic Dungeon, Greater Rifts
- Builds and Paragon when you near 100
- Runes once rifts open

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about Shadow Dungeon.
Can I change my class after starting?
No. Shadow Dungeon does not allow class changes after creation. All four classes are viable for the full 30–50 hour campaign and Greater Rifts. Start a new character if the playstyle is wrong. Knowledge transfers; the save does not.
Should I follow a specific build guide from the start?
Learn your three talent trees first. Launch-week rankings on the Tier List are still settling on 1.0.1. Talent Trees and class pages describe official playstyles without invented spell names.
How important is exploration in the early game?
Useful. Drops follow the map, so exploring the current map is how you gear for that map. Do not skip ahead hoping to overlevel.
What difficulty should I play on?
Use the in-game options. Greater Rifts after the story are the published four-step hard ladder (Normal through Inferno). This guide will not invent five mystic tiers.
Can I pause the game to look at guides?
Yes. Steam lists Save Anytime. Open the menu, pause, and read. There is no need to play in one sitting.
